On the Edge of a Planetary Age

This drawing series explores humanity's journey towards becoming a Type 1 Civilization, when energy, technology, and consciousness begin to function at a planetary scale. The series reflects on where we currently stand within the cosmic continuum, and where we may be heading next.

The Signs of the Planetary Culture

The Signs of the Planetary Culture

I’m not studying this transition from afar, it’s unfolding around us every day…in real time. I’m usually carrying a pocket sketchbook, capturing the subtle signals of early planetary culture from observation and memory, shaped by my perspective as a second-generation Sudanese who grew up in the multicultural ecosystems of Koreatown and South Central LA.

We're currently a Type .72 civilization (2010s-present).

Global internet infrastructure, smartphones, social media, climate awareness, and the first wave of AI shape our lives.

Culturally, the world is still divided by nations and tribes, but people increasingly think, communicate, and create on a global scale.

The Prototype

LA behaves less like a single city and more like an early planetary node, previewing the kind of decentralized, multi-ethnic, tech-driven civilization emerging at the global scale.

The city has been a planetary crossroads for decades with mass immigration, hybrid identities, global subcultures (hip-hop, skate, streetwear, wellness, spirituality, etc.) all mixing into something that doesn’t feel like any single nation.

How Planetary Society Functions

Subculturals in LA (Graffiti writers, gangs, cyclists, lowriders, skateboarders, etc) are unique because they treat the city like a programmable interface rather than a fixed environment.

LA’s subcultures reveal how future planetary cities might function, through bottom-up cultural code written directly onto the urban environment.

The rise of commercial automation accelerates our trajectory toward Type 1 by shifting society from manual, localized labor to globally networked, machine-optimized systems. Supply chains and energy systems are expected to operate as a unified, automated organism.

I'm not study planetary culture from a distance. I grew up in it. These drawings come from memory, observation, and everyday life. Its an attempt to make sense of a world that’s been quietly becoming planetary all around us.

Journey to Type 1: Volume I

The drawings you see here are part of an ongoing body of work documenting a world in transition, fragments of a planetary culture emerging in real time.

I’m currently assembling Volume 1 of Journey to Type 1: a collected artbook of drawings and observations that signal a planetary culture emerging in real time.

If you’re interested in the journey or simply collecting the work for reference as an artist, I invited to follow along.

Sign up to receive updates and the release date for Volume 1.
